Jonglei state pays tribute to fallen general Madhang

The communities of Jonglei State have paid tribute to the deceased Brig. Gen Ajang Deng Akoy alias Madhang who succumbed to a sudden illness on March 22, 2024, in Juba.

Chol Michael Maker, a colleague of the late Ajang said he played a pivotal role in the Bright Star Campaign (BSC) in the early 1990s that liberated the entire Western Equatoria State.

“We lament the departure of a remarkable and valiant officer, a leader who epitomized extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication throughout his military career,” he told The Dawn on Sunday in Juba.

“Ajang’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew him, and his enduring contributions to the quest for peace and liberty in this illustrious nation shall never be forgotten,” Maker added.

Maker revealed that Ajang underwent training with the Tiger battalion of the then Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and subsequently specialized in Air Defense.

He said that Ajang’s unwavering loyalty to his comrades and the people under his command stands as a testament.

“His tenure with these military units underscored his exceptional leadership prowess and his readiness to place himself in harm’s way for the greater good. His contributions to the SPLA, especially through his involvement in the aforementioned campaigns, have left an indelible mark on the SPLA history,” he said.

Gabriel Bul Kuany, a close friend of Ajang hailed him as a revered and esteemed leader who made significant advancements in the battle for peace and freedom in South Sudan.

 “Ajang fought a just war without reservation.  He was a fearless patriot, a bold soldier whom South Sudan will miss,” said Kuany.

Thuch Mabil Awer, a native of Twic East County in Jonglei State said that Ajang’s contribution to the liberation war will be remembered within the SSPDF, adding that his legacy will stand as a guiding light for future generations of soldiers.

“He was absolutely a genuine and humble character, he used to get along with everyone and this proved that he was unique among his peers and community at large,” said Mabil.

Ajang was born in 1967 in Wanglei area of Twic East County in Jonglei State. He joined the then rebel movement Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in 1983.

His remains will be paraded for public viewing in the SSPDF army headquarters on Monday and he will then be flown to Jonglei State for burial at the army base in Malual -caat.

  1. Absolutely it is really sad news to loss such a brave leader abruptly.
    He is very loyal person according to my personal views I knew him . He will be remember forever because he was a nationalist indeed. Let the army HQ will be remembering such a person who had joined the army as under age until he became Brigadier Gen. in the army his contributions has brought independence of this nation. His soul as a hero will rest in peace!!
