Rumbek municipal council confiscates banned alcoholic spirits in shops

A team of local officials led by the Mayor of Rumbek town, Akhol Manyang Magom on Thursday inspected shops and confiscated alcoholic spirits that were banned by the Lakes State government in 2023.

The spirits that were confiscated include star gin, and Uganda Waragi among others.

The spirits were burnt after being confiscated at a local police station.

The operation came in the aftermath of police officers discovering the dead body of a man alleged to have died of excessive alcohol consumption.

About 27 people have been arrested for consuming and also brewing local spirits during the Eid-al Fitr festival in Rumbek town.

Magom said they will also crack down on people found playing dominos.

The Executive Director of Rumbek Central County, Majok Arop Majok urged relatives of those detained to lobby for their release.

He also blamed parents for not doing enough to guide well their children, leaving them to engage in destructive activities such as overconsumption of alcohol.
