Juba City Council on Friday suspended three unknown companies that it had contracted to collect garbage around the city.

Mogga Franco Wani, First Deputy Mayor for Administration and Finance of Juba City Council said the companies that were contracted seven months ago failed to collect garbage around Juba town, Kator and Muniki suburbs.

“We suspended the operation of three contracted companies, these companies were contracted by the City Council and their job description was simple, garbage collection and cleaning of the three blocks,” Franco said during a press conference held in Juba.

Franco said the decision was taken after the companies failed to manage garbage collection due to lack of capacity and human resource to execute their task.

He directed directors of Juba town, Kator and Muniki to take charge of garbage collection and cleaning of waste in their respective blocks.

“This compelled us to the end their contracts because the City Council is held accountable at the end of the day, and I think it is time we decided as City Council to suspend these companies,” Franco said.

He also directed the Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management to make public advertisements within 14-days to allow open competition for credible national and international companies.

“The Deputy Mayor Environment and Waste Management will constitute a team and there will be an advertisement to the general public because we believe that there are companies and South Sudanese that are capable of doing this particular job,” Franco said.

For his part, Thiik Thiik Mayardit, Deputy Mayor for Social Service said the affected companies lacked capacity, equipment and cash to manage waste.

“We terminated the contract of the companies because they do not have human resources, they are not capable of doing that and they don’t have cars, they were only using our own cars which were purchased by City Council money,” Thiik said.

On June 7, 2023, the Juba City Council terminated the contract of the East Africa Go Green Company after it failed to collect garbage for two months.
