State authorities evict squatters near NILEPET headquarters

The Central Equatoria State authorities on Wednesday forcefully evicted squatters near the headquarters of the state-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited (NILEPET) in Juba.

Mawa A. Moses, Spokesperson of for the Central Equatoria State demolition committee, said they are implementing the directive of President Salva Kiir Mayardit who in March 2024 ordered for the removal of illegal structures.

“We have today (Wednesday) successfully implemented the directive of His Excellency the President of the Republic of South Sudan during the inauguration of the headquarters of NILEPET,” Moses told journalists in Juba.

 “He directed His Excellency the Governor of Central Equatoria State, to ensure that there are no squatters here, and today we are glad to inform him that we have successfully removed all these squatters,” he disclosed.

Moses encouraged landowners around the area to develop their plots.

“We have also handed over the management of the security of this place to NILEPET, and as of now our role is to make sure that owners of land develop it, we don’t want to see squatters here again,” he said.

Moses said their next move will be to reclaim the football grounds in Mauna and Rock city.
