More than 50,000, about 80 percent of the population in Tambura County of Western Equatoria State have been displaced in the weeklong communal violence.
Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), said the displaced persons currently sheltering in churches, schools and the UNMISS temporary base in Tambura are in dire need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
“The continued attack on innocent civilians in Tambura County have further compounded an already dire humanitarian situation, as over 50,000 persons are displaced from their homes and have sought refuge in churches, schools and UNMISS temporary base in Tambura town,” Nunu said during press conference held in Juba on Friday.
She appealed to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to mobilize funds to assist the displaced persons.
“I therefore, appeal to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission to mobilize humanitarian organizations to extend timely and unimpeded humanitarian assistance to displaced victims affected by the crisis,” Nunu said.
She urged authorities of Western Equatoria State to curb the violence and restore peace and stability in the restive county.
“I call upon the people of Western Equatori State and Tambura County in particular to remain calm and maintain their long standing peaceful and harmonious coexistence,” she said.
“I urge relevant government institutions to do everything within their capacity to restore peace in Tambura County,” Nunu said.
She urged the youth involved in the “barbaric killings” to cease immediately and allow peace a chance.
”As your mother and leader from the area, I know fighting and killings have never been part of our society. It is not our culture as people of Tambura and indeed Western Equatoria State in general,” Nunu said.
