Extrajudicial killings in Warrap State dent image of SSPDF

Reports that 8 people including two soldiers suspected of murder and cattle raiding in Warrap State were held in a shipping container, leading to death of 7 due to suffocation is barbaric.

The soldiers who detained these people belong to the SSPDF 11th division in Kuajok town. Their deaths are another act of extrajudicial killings.

Many doubt whether the truth will come out from the investigation committee recently formed by Kuol Muor Muor, the Governor of Warrap State. This committee which is comprised of the SSPDF division commander and State attorney general among others should dig out the truth to enable justice to be served.

The image of the SSPDF has suffered another irreparable damage, as it seeks to rid itself of the moniker of it’s soldiers acting unprofessional.

A standard professional army, which the SSPDF aspires to be, cannot tolerate detention of suspects in shipping containers under humid heat.

The soldiers behind this chilling crime must be prosecuted before competent court in order to deter such impunity.

The constitution of South Sudan prohibits detention of civilians in military facilities, but this seems to continue in total disregard of the law.
