More than 6,000 civilians have been displaced in the wake of the April deadly clashes, between the armed opposition National Salvation Front (NAS) and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) in Mundri East of Western Equatoria State.
Maj. Gen Hailu Gonfa Eddosa, chairperson of the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), on Thursday said the displaced civilians from Minga Payam are now sheltering in Kediba Payam of Mundri East County and Rokon in neighboring Central Equatorial State.
“There are incidents of reported violence perpetrated by suspected elements of the National Salvation Front in Mundri Counties of Western Equatoria State, especially in Minga and Wiro Payam,” Gonfa said during the meeting of the technical committee of CTSAMVM in Juba.
He also expressed concern about reports of tensions in Tambura County, Western Equatorial State which put the lives of many innocent civilians at risk.
“We welcome the decision of the Governor of Western Equatoria State to deploy a security force to de-escalate the tension in that area,” he said.
The Acting Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Yambio, Thomas Aringa Paul in a recent interview with The Dawn, said the displaced people totaling about 1048 in Rokon area lack food and shelter.
Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, the SSPDF representative in CTSAMVM urged NAS to renounce rebellion and seek for peaceful means of settling their grievances.
“Our message to NAS leadership is that there must be an end to everything, and I think the time has come for our brothers and sisters who are in opposition to come to their senses and talk to the government to reach a peaceful settlement so that people of this country can enjoy peace,” Mujung said.
