IGAD warns of heavy rainfall in Horn of Africa until September 2024                                         

It revealed that the rain pattern between June and September this year will be above normal range  in Djibouti, Eritrea, central and northern Ethiopia, and western and coastal Kenya, and much of Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan.

The greater part of the Horn of Africa is expected to receive heavy rains between June and September 2024, according to a communiqué issued in Juba, the capital of South Sudan on Tuesday at the end the 67th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum organized by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

It revealed that the rain pattern between June and September this year will be above normal range  in Djibouti, Eritrea, central and northern Ethiopia, and western and coastal Kenya, and much of Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan.           

“On the other hand, part of northern Somalia, isolated areas over western Ethiopia and north western South Sudan are expected to experience drier than normal conditions,” it said.       

The two-day conference which opened on Monday was attended by representatives from member countries of the regional bloc and Guleid Artan, the Director IGAD-Climate Prediction and Application Center (ICPAC).

 IGAD countries noted that the weather pattern from June to September this year resembled the 1998 and 2007 weather partners, adding that some parts of the region including South Sudan will experience earlier to normal onset of rainfall pattern.                                          

“An early to normal rainfall onset is expected in several parts of the region including central and northern Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan. However, a delayed onset is likely in Djibouti, part of Eastern and western Ethiopia, central and western Sudan and northern South Sudan,” it disclosed.

It noted that temperature forecast show a probability of warmer than normal conditions across the region particularly over northern Sudan, central and western Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

It said that the IGAD-Climate Prediction and Application Center, has adopted an objective seasonal forecast method to generate climate forecast for the greater Horn of Africa .
