Nurses call for improved working conditions

The South Sudan Nurses and Midwifery Association on Wednesday urged the government and partners to improve working condition for nurses and midwives the health sector.

The future of health care in South Sudan is fundamentally linked to the future of nursing as such supporting the nursing workforce is not optional, it is obligatory. Therefore, I on behalf of South Sudan nurses and midwives’ association call for action from our leaders, policy makers and partners,” said Repent Taban, the President of South Sudan Nurses and Midwifery Association Taban during celebration to mark International Nurses Day.

The ceremony was heldat Kator Primary Health Care Center in Juba.

Taban urged the government to increase funding for nursing education and create more opportunities for career advancement within the nursing profession.

He also called on the government to implement measures to improve the working environment for nurses such as adequate staffing, access to resources and safe working environment.

Ademola Olajide, the Country Representative for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said decent working condition is critical for attracting healthcare workers to foster resilience and promote well-being necessary to build a productive society.

“Nurses and midwives are pillars of our community and their contributions extend far beyond the clinic and hospital, they inspire trust, foster resilience and promote the well-being necessary to build productive and prosperous societies,” said Ademola.

The International Nursing Day, which is annually marked on May 12, was celebrated under the theme, “The economic power of care with key aim of retaining and attracting health care workers for the societal well-being”.
