Violent clashes in Juba POC demonstrate the need to shore up security

The violent clashes which occurred last Sunday in the Juba Protection of Civilians site should compel authorities to shore up security.

The violent clashes which occurred last Sunday in the Juba Protection of Civilians site should compel authorities to shore up security.

The clashes which lasted for nearly five days between Leek and Dok communities of Unity State left six people killed and scores injured.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan in 2020 handed over responsibility of managing the POC to the government. The presence of a small police force and the army demonstrates that more needs to be done to protect displaced civilians in the POC.

The police and army could intensify joint patrols inside and outside the POC to secure the population.

Why not establish a permanent police force inside the camp backed by the army. This way the government will be in position to take charge of security inside the populous POC.

The radical option is to facilitate the reintegration of some people inside the POC into the civilian population in Juba and other places/homes of origin.
