The Minister of Youth and Sport Dr. Joseph Geng Akec on Thursday reversed the recent decision taken by the electoral committee of the National Youth and Sports Council to disqualify John Angeth Kenyi from the race for the chairmanship of the National Youth Union.
Kenyi who belongs to union of persons with disabilities, last week sought the intervention of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Joseph Geng Akech.
“Having perused the petition and acting under article 114 of the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan 2011 as amended, I hereby reverse the decision of the Electoral Committee and National Youth and Sports Council,” Geng said in a letter written to Ramadan M. Moga, Chairperson of the National Youth and Sports Council.
Kenyi was nominated by the union of persons with disabilities after meeting the age limit of 21-31 required for candidates aspiring for leadership of the national youth union.
“The petitioner is a youth within the meaning of South Sudan Youth Regulations 2019 and South Sudan Youth Development Policy 2024. The policy of the government is to empower youth and promote inclusivity and social cohesion among them,” Geng said.
He disclosed that article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), obligates state parties to ensure that persons with disabilities effectively and fully participate in the political and public life on equal basis with others.
