The Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Monday adopted its report on the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The TNLA sent a delegation led by Dr.John Gai Yoh to the IPU meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland from 23 to 27 March 2024.
The IPU meeting held under the theme, “Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding” was chaired by IPU President, Dr. Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania.
It discussed the role of legislatures in promoting a resilient and peaceful world.
Oliver Mori Benjamin, chairperson of the parliamentary committee for information and communication, said parliament will implement the resolutions of the IPU.
“The issues related to security were also brought up and discussed thoroughly, and after thorough discussion, the house unanimously adopted the report with observations and recommendations,” Mori told journalists after the parliamentary session in Juba.
He said the report included issues related to women, young parliamentarians, environment and the representation of Africa in the U.N. Security Council as permanent members.
“The members expressed their concern that this point must be pursued in the coming session of the international parliamentary union,” he said.
“The role of the parliament is not to extract from this report, what is required of us as parliament of South Sudan is to implement those resolutions and definitely some of the resolutions parliament may not implement them without involvement of the executive,” Mori said.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a global organization that brings together national parliaments.
It was founded in 1889 to promote peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue.
