Time is running out for the government on critical pending issues

As the politicians drum up support for the December 2024 general elections, there is need for the entire leadership in the transitional government of national unity not to lose track of the critical pending peace tasks.

As the politicians drum up support for the December 2024 general elections, there is need for the entire leadership in the transitional government of national unity not to lose track of the critical pending peace tasks.

The enactment key electoral laws, permanent constitutional-making process and the full implementation of the security arrangements are still pending.

These issues are vital in ensuring the conduct free, fair and credible elections.

The ongoing Nairobi peace talks seem to have overshadowed efforts to implement the 2018 revitalized peace agreement in letter and spirit.

The parties in the transitional unity government should not lose focus of the main peace agreement that has so far ushered in relative peace in the country.

Elections cannot be held in vacuum because this could lead to serious ramifications. Every South Sudanese wants to participate in an election devoid of intimidation, fear and anxiety.

The politicians need to know what they are going into is not an event but a process, that could either put South Sudan toward a new democratic dispensation or see the country degenerate in terms of good governance and democracy.
