The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) with support from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) has dispatched 9 laptops to it’s state branches to support members in their day-to-day work.

Majak Daniel Kuany, UJOSS Secretary General said the laptops will facilitate media professionals in the countryside to do their work effectively.

“We plan to equip all state branches with working equipment, and one of them are these computers because they don’t have gadgets to do their work,” Majak told the Dawn in an interview.

Majak said the laptops purchased with funds from Norwegian People’s Aid will help in documentation of violations of media rights in the states.

“It will help them to be able to document issues of media violations for us to be able have concrete media landscape,” he said.

Majak disclosed that Western Equatoria State has been excluded because one of the partners provided them with a computer.

“Western Equatoria is not going to receive because they had a request made early this month for them to be able to organize a mini–Word Press Freedom Day celebration in Maridi, and one of the partners provided them with a computer,” he disclosed.

He said the computers will also help state branches in documentation of their activities.

“They have to use them for the benefit of all the journalists in States because the reason why we constituted these state branches is for them lobby at state level, for them to be able to write and use those computers to write stories and also for official documentation of the activities within the States,” Majak said.

The Union of Journalists of South Sudan was founded in 2004 with the aim of protecting journalists, media freedom and ethical standards.
