The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Friday expressed deep concern on the rising tension in Malakal town of Upper Nile State following the death of several people on Thursday due to communal violence.

The ongoing fighting between the Dinka community and Shilluk community over the disputed Akoka area has left several people killed in different locations of Malakal.

The violence has overwhelmed even the available security forces in the town. In addition, the fate of internally displaced persons (IDPs) caught up in the violence in Malakal town remains unknown.

The national government needs to take up the responsibility of restoring order. If this is not done on time the death toll could rise further.

Communal violence remains the biggest hindrance to peace and stability across South Sudan. It portrays the country in bad light, despite some progress registered in the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.

The situation in Malakal is deeply worrying due to the fact that the UN peacekeeping forces there, are currently finding it very difficult to patrol the town and other surroundings.
