The Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA) on Monday revealed plans to establish sports club to represent the assembly in regional and international sporting events.

The request to establish the RTNLA sports club was tabled before the house on Monday by Bol Toby Maduot, MP from Warrap State.

Maduot argued that setting up the sports club would allow MPs and supporting staff to actively partake in sports activities to improve their fitness and health.

He explained that the sports club shall comprise a general assembly and executive committee which shall be responsible for day-to-day management of the club, adding that the executive committee shall comprise five secretariats to be headed by the Chairperson.

“Sports club will help eradicate high levels of inactivity among members of parliament, particularly among members with long-term health conditions,” Maduot said.

He also disclosed that it will help to improve physical, mental health and wellbeing of MPs.

“Sports and physical activity can change lives. They improve physical, mental health and wellbeing that lead to better quality of life. For many, social interaction and enjoyment of sport and physical activity brings significant personal rewards,” Maduot said.

Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly said as a member of EAC inter-parliamentary games, the assembly is required to establish a sports club to coordinate the activities of the games.

She added that a parliament must have health club where MPs can go and exercise for health purposes.

“Since we are still developing, this club will be established and it will be well equipped with gym equipment for members of parliament to be fit, and it must be compulsory to each member to exercise during their free time,” Nunu said.
