The African Union has called for international support toward preparations for the upcoming general elections slated for December 2024.
“We call upon the international community to come on board in terms of support and assistance of the (electoral) process,” said Prof. Dr. Joram Mukama Biswaro, the African Union Ambassador to South Sudan during his meeting with Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, First Vice President at his official residence in Juba.
He expressed hope that South Sudanese would have peaceful, transparent and credible elections at the time they decide.
“At the same time, respect what South Sudanese will decide as far as their future and the election is concerned,” Biswaro said.
He noted that it’s the sovereign right to South Sudanese to decide what to do, adding that the African Union and international community are expected to complement these efforts toward a peaceful South Sudan.
South Sudan is expected to conduct its first ever election in December 2024 after gaining independence from Sudan in 2011.
The poll would signify a milestone in efforts to secure lasting peace since the end of the civil war which broke out in 2013.
