The People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) has demanded a smooth transition to civilian rule at the ongoing peace talks in Nairobi, between the government and holdout groups.

Abraham Awolich, the co-founder of PCCA said they are not seeking political power or money but they want power to be returned to the native people of South Sudan.

“The PCCA and its leadership are on the table seeking not political power, not money or fame. We are on the table seeking a constitutional agreement that returns power to the people of South Sudan,” Awolich said in a statement seen by The Dawn on Wednesday.

The government and opposition parties have been attending talks mediated by the Kenyan government since May 3, 2024.

Awolich said the people of South Sudan need a constitution that restructures power and the state, saying it is the only way to move this country forward.

He said they are advocating for the return of the military to the barracks where they can protect all the citizens and not just the warlords, adding that this is the only way to end the privatization of the military.

“The time has come to reconsider the idea of presidential guards. This idea does not work in a democracy, it is designed for authoritarian regimes,” Awolich said.

“Tiger Division must go back to the mother unit and a new independent agency under the Ministry of Interior, should be established to protect the VIPs,” he added.

Awolich said PCCA is focused on pushing for genuine reforms and not cosmetic theatrics that have been seen over the last decade.

“If the government is unwilling to take these proposals seriously, we are not in a hurry to sign another fake agreement,” he said.

PCCA is a grouping of civil society activists that launched a public campaign in August 2021 to demand good governance.
