Bank of South Sudan (BOSS) has started printing new banknotes reflecting the change of name from South Sudanese Pounds to South Sudan Pounds.

Dr. James Alic Garang, Governor of the Bank of South Sudan said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the new banknotes have the same principal characteristics as in the previously issued banknotes of SSP 1000.

“The Bank of South Sudan informs the public that it has issued more banknote series of one thousand South Sudan Pounds,” Alic said.

Alic said that the issuance is in accordance with the Banking Act 2012 and the Bank of South Sudan Act 2023.

“There is, however, change in the wordings of this series as South Sudan Pounds instead of South Sudanese Pounds, while all other specifications remain the same,” he said.

Alic urged all financial and non-financial instructions to take note of the changes.

On September 26, 2023, the Transitional National Legislative Assembly passed the Banking and Other Financial Institutions Bill 2023, replacing the mane of the country’s currency from South Sudanese Pound to South Sudan Pounds.

The change of name was recommended as necessary to assert South Sudan’s sovereignty and to create a currency that is unique to the country.
