Cabinet endorses new IGAD treaty widening scope of cooperation among States

Government has endorsed ratification treaty establishing Inter-governmental Authority on Development, (IGAD) marking a pivotal moment in the regional cooperation.

Government has endorsed ratification treaty establishing Inter-governmental Authority on Development, (IGAD) marking a pivotal moment in the regional cooperation.

The memo on the IGAD treaty was presented to cabinet on Friday by Ruben Madol Arol, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

Dr. Jacob Mijok Korok, Deputy Minister for Information, Communication, Technology and Postal Services said the new treaty aims to widen and deepen cooperation among member states to achieve sustainable development in the region.

“The purpose of the treaty is to replace the Agreement Establishing the Anti-Governmental Authority on Development, IGAD, so as to widen and deepen cooperation to achieve sustainable development,” Korok told journalists after the weekly cabinet meeting.

 “The objective of this treaty is to accelerate regional, economic, social and environmental and political integrations and cross-border cooperation among the Member States,” he added.

The treaty was adopted by Heads of States and government during the 14th ordinary session of the IGAD summit held in Djibouti on 12 June 2023.

It expands and diversifies areas of cooperation among member states and with international community.

The renewed treaty expands and diversifies the scope of cooperation among IGAD states, laying the foundation for enhanced unity and solidarity in addressing regional challenges.

The endorsement reflects the government’s dedication to advancing the goals of IGAD and promoting peace, stability in the region.
