CEPO kick starts awareness campaign on rights of persons with disabilities

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) on Wednesday launched awareness campaign on the UN Convention of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and its optional protocol signed by President Salva Kiir on February 24, 2023.

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) on Wednesday launched awareness campaign on the UN Convention of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and its optional protocol signed by President Salva Kiir on February 24, 2023.

Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director for CEPO said the campaign dubbed “I am for UNCRPD” will be a platform that that will recognize and reward individuals and institutions that have made outstanding efforts in promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in the country.

Yakani said CEPO will next year during the commemoration of the South Sudan 14th independence anniversary, launch it’s annual national campaign on the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

“CEPO is urging the general public, government officials, private sector, media, and civil society, including others to effectively engage in the campaign. One day, the campaign “I am for UNCRPD South Sudan” will be a regional and global campaign on the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities,” he said.

Yakani disclosed that CEPO will annually collaborate with the national ministry of gender, child and social welfare, South Sudan Union of Persons with Disabilities and other development partners such as Light for the World tp promote the rights of persons with disabilities.

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres last year officially wrote to the government of South Sudan urging it to enforce the implementation of the UNCRPD and its optional protocol.
