The Local authorities of Lakes State has returned over 183 heads of cattle raided in March from Tonj East County of Warrap State.

The cattle were raided in March 2024 in Tonj East County by armed youth from Rumbek North County of Lakes State.

This prompted Lakes State Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabior to form a committee to recover the stolen cattle.

Chol Kuotwel Manhom, Lakes State Minister of Local government said the cattle were handed over to their owners in Rumbek town on Thursday.

“We are very grateful to the committee who went down to the cattle camps, talked to the people and engaged them and make sure that these cattle are released,” Chol was quoted by SSBC saying on Thursday.

Chol said the initiative is meant to create peace and understanding between the two neighboring communities to forge peaceful co-existence.

He said the committee is still working with the chiefs to recover and return the remaining stolen cows.

“Currently there are some cows which have been collected already and they are in Maper and Meen and there are going to be brought here and this is where we will continued to hand them over to their owners,” he said.

Marial Chol Madit, Warrap State Coordinator in Lakes State commended state government efforts to recovered stolen cows.

“There is good relationship between Lakes and Warrap, we have not received a report of people been killed on the road and with good leadership of Gen. Rin Tueny, the rampant killing of people along the road has stopped,” Chol said.
