The Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) on Saturday opened a branch in Aweil town, capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State to provide opportunities for local employment and facilitate financial services.

The inauguration ceremony was witnessed by the Central Bank governor, Dr. James Alic Garang who was accompanied by his first deputy, Samuel Yanga Mikaya and other senior officials on 29 June 2024.

Dr. James Alic Garang, Central Bank Governor said the opening of the bank’s branch in Aweil signified government policy of bringing the town to the people.

“Not only will the bank bring financial services to Aweil, but it will also create some jobs for the locals because the Central Bank will not create more jobs but some jobs,” Dr. Alic told state-owned broadcaster, SSBC on Saturday.

Alic said the branch in Aweil would allow the bank to boost revenue collection, therefore, lessening the risk related to collection of revenues.

“At the same time, having a branch in Aweil will allow the bank to foster financial inclusion and economic development in Aweil within its environment and beyond,” he said.

According to the bank’s governor, bringing essential financial services nearer to the people will foster financial inclusion.

“The same bank would also reduce transaction cost and attract commercial banks in the area who would then provide financial services both to the state, community and to the national government.”

For his part, Dr. Tong Lual, Deputy Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State lauded the bank for extending financial services to the state.

“Since the Central Bank is here, we are going to have finances for farming and small scale farmers will be financed by Agricultural Bank and the loans will be provided through Central Bank,” Lual said.
