Justice Minister tables four bills in parliament

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ruben Madol, on Monday, tabled four bills in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) after they were passed by the council of ministers.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ruben Madol, on Monday, tabled four bills in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) after they were passed by the council of ministers.

The bills include Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing Act, 2012 amendment bill 2024, the U.N. Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols Thereto, the U.N. Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1988 and International Convention for Suppression of Financing Terrorism 1999. 

After the presentation, Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of TNLA submitted the bills to the relevant committees to hold public hearings and present them within 14 days.

The Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Bill aims to crack down on illicit financing, drug trafficking and terrorism financing.

The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, was adopted by the General Assembly on 15 November 2000.

The aim of the international instrument is to fight against transnational organized crime.

The United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances was established in 1988 

It provides comprehensive measures against drug trafficking, including provisions against money laundering and the diversion of precursor’s chemicals.

The International Convention for Suppression of Financing Terrorism 1999 treaty aims to criminalize and prevent the financing of acts of terrorism.

It encourages police and judicial cooperation among the parties to investigate and punish such acts.

The convention was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly on 9th December 1999 and entered into force on 10th April 2002.
