The new head of the council of chiefs on Monday promised to push for unity among the communities across the country.

“My plan is clear and simple, my job is to mobilize all the chiefs nationwide and make sure they are all on the same page, our goal is to unite all the 64 tribes,” said Angui Deng Macham Angui Garang in an interview with The Dawn.

Garang ,45, a military officer with a master’s degree in economics was elected last week to replace his late father Sultan Deng Macham Angui as the head of the council for traditional chiefs in the country.

His 72-year-old father Deng Macham Angui died in May 2020 in Juba.

Garang said that the council of chiefs plays a positive role in mediating local conflicts, adding that chiefs are good in identifying the root causes of conflict in the society.

“Chiefs stay close to the people, they are conservatives of the society, they know what goes on in the village, chiefs cannot do other things that will be considered immoral to the society, and they teach about culture and heritage,” he said.

Garang also added that traditional chiefs also play vital role in counseling and spreading awareness among communities they lead.
