The opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has reiterated the need to fully implement the outstanding issues in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement prior to holding general election slated for December 2024.

Nathaniel Oyet Pierino, Deputy Chairperson of the SPLM-IO, said during press conference in Juba over the weekend that they are not worried about the conduct of elections but they want full implementation of the deal before the polls.

“And we are telling our partners in the revitalized agreement, that we must implement the agreement which is the basis of the resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan,” Oyet said.

Oyet said that the parties within the inter-party dialogue have evaluated the peace roadmap, adding that their report is out and discussions are underway on the way forward.

“And based on our position, we are asking other parties, including the incumbent ITGoNU, to convince us that with the time left, the implementation of the peace agreement, the pending tasks and the prerequisites are going to be completed prior to the conduct of elections or prior to the end of the transitional period,” Oyet said.

He said they will not be party to any abrogation of the 2018 peace agreement.

“We are not going to be party to any process or any decision that shall abrogate the peace agreement. We know the peace process has been moving, staggering, moving slowly,” Oyet said.

However, Oyet expressed hope that the parties which engaged in the inter-party dialogue will reach a solution to all the pending issues.

“And according to the matrix of the implementation, there are critical processes that by now should have been completed, including the security arrangements, the permanent constitution, the transitional justice, and many critical processes,” he disclosed.

The general elections had been initially scheduled to take place in February 2022, but were postponed to December this year due to the parties having failed to complete the implementation of outstanding critical issues such as the security arrangements, enactment of the permanent constitution and other critical things within the peace agreement.
