The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani on Monday asked for public hearing to be conducted before the Commission for Truth, Healing and Reconciliation and Compensation and Reparation Authority Bills are passed by MPs.
“We are appealing to the parliament that before the third reading there is need to conduct public hearing on the contents of the legislations that are passed to the third reading,” Yakani said in an interview in Juba.
He noted that wide consultations need to be conducted on the two critical bills.
The Transitional National Legislative Assembly last week passed the two bills to the third reading.
Yakani called on the MPs to finalize the bills for the establishment of Commission for Truth, Healing and Reconciliation and Compensation and Reparation Authority before parliamentary recess, adding that political transition cannot be successful without effective and genuine transitional justice.
“Transitional justice is a foundation for building a State during post-conflict situation, we hope that the legislation for the transitional justice will be enacted before the parliament breaks for recess,” he said.
The two bills under chapter 5 of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement are critical in paving way for healing, reconciliation, and also compensation to victims and survivors of the conflict which broke out since December 2013.
