The Germany government has invested more than 20 billion euros to establish urban water supply systems in Juba, Yambio, Yei and Torit.
Christian Sedat, German Ambassador to South Sudan said during the handover of two modern water supply systems in Torit on Monday that access to safe clean water is a fundamental human right and essential for development.
“Germany has been supporting South Sudan’s water sector for many years. Our support to urban water supply systems now stands at more than 20 million euros,” Sedat said.
He disclosed that the water supply projects provide better sanitation services to people across the country.
“Through our German support more than a quarter million of people in South Sudan now have access to safe and clean drinking water,” Sedat said.
“The towns of Juba, Yambio, and Yei have already benefited from our support together with UNICEF, and the latest addition to the German funded water supply system is Torit,” he revealed.
Sedat said they have financed the rehabilitated water supply project in Torit town at a cost of two million U.S dollars.
The water supply systems in Juba, Yei, Yambio and Torit are equipped with their own storage tanks.
In Torit more than 40,000 people are now accessing clean drinking water.
The upgraded supply system in Torit includes two boreholes equipped with solar-powered submersible pumps, a 25-kilometre pipeline distribution network, and an additional 500 cubic meter storage.
The project has also added 25 new water kiosks to the existing eight ones which will reach more people and shorten distance to water collection points.
The rehabilitation and expansion work commenced with phase 1 in November 2022, which upgraded the water treatment plant.
By June 2023, phase 2 had restored the water supply and installed solar panels, generators, and tanks.
The system now includes a chlorine dosing mechanism to minimize the risk of contamination during collection and storage to ensure water safety.
