The Warrap State flood management committee has promised to carry out flood risk assessment in areas that are prone to torrential flooding in a bid to prepare emergency response.

“As part of our term of reference, the Warrap State flood management committee met with the cluster committees to map out the available resources and the gaps,” said William Wol Mayom, the Warrap State minister of information and communication on Tuesday in Kuajok town.

Mayom said that several cluster members have responded positively to the flood emergency response, adding that the assessment is expected to be done next week.

In June, Kuol Muor Muor the Gvernor of Warrap State formed flood management committee to map out flood-prone areas and put in place measures including erecting dikes.

The committee which comprises of the state minister of agriculture and animal resources and the state relief and rehabilitation commission is tasked to lay down policies that will see government and partners responding appropriately to looming floods.

The IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre in May 2024 predicted that floods between June and September this year will cause mass displacement, diseases outbreak and destruction of livelihoods in parts of South Sudan including Unity, Jonglei, Upper Nile and Warrap states.
