"We Dare where others fear"

A local official said on Tuesday that a road ambush in Nyirol County, Jonglei State, resulted in the deaths of a mother and her son and the kidnapping of five children.
Biel Jiek Lual Chai, Information Director of Nyirol County, Jonglei State, said the victims were ambushed at 5:00 pm on Sunday, while traveling from Malakal to Pultruk Payam of Nyirol County by suspected armed youth from Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
“It is with a heavy heart that I report a horrific incident that took place on July 28, 2024, at 5:00 pm, where innocent civilians traveling from Malakal to Pultruk Payam of Nyirol County were brutally attacked by the armed criminals from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area,” Jiel said in a statement seen by Dawn on Tuesday.
Jiel said the attacked left a mother with her young son killed, and two others, including an executive chief and a child injured.
“The merciless attack claimed the lives of two individuals—a woman and her young son. In addition, five children were abducted, and two individuals, including an executive chief and a child, were wounded.”
The leadership of Nyirol County strongly condemned what he called ‘a’senseless act of violence’, he said.
“I was deeply shocked and distressed by the recurring attacks on our innocent civilians by the Murle armed criminals,” he said.
He said the recurrence attack has caused immeasurable suffering and loss of property, adding that it has disrupted the peace and stability among the people.
He called on local authorities of Greater Pibor Administrative Area leadership to intervene by taking robust action against the perpetrators of these heinous crimes.
“It is crucial to ensure the safety and security of our people and bring an end to these relentless attacks,” he said.
