The Support Peace Initiative Development Organization’s Rule of Law officer, Morris John Peter, pleaded with the transitional government on Tuesday to give the National Constitution Review Commission funding for the constitution-making process.

“We need to expedite the process of budget in order for fund to be quickly release to NCRC to start work on constitution making process, there is also need to have different budget source,” said Peter at Landmark Hotel during the closing of the two day workshop on constitution making process on Tuesday.

Peter urged both the executive and National Constitution Review Commission to embrace independent, transparency and accountability, adding that public participation is critical for a successful constitution making process.

Wodcan Saviour Lazarus, the executive director of SPIDO said the workshop was meant to create awareness on the constitution-making process that will lead to the enactment of the permanent constitution.

Elijah Liec Bany, a member of the Committee of Human Rights in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, said the assembly is optimistic that the country will soon have a people driven constitution.

“The permanent constitution making process is one of the priorities of the revitalized peace agreement, I am quite optimistic that we will participate very positively, we need to expedite the process so that we have a permanent constitution,” said Bany.

Maka Mustafa, the chairperson for legislation and legal affairs in the central Equatoria state legislative assembly, said the legislators will work hard to disseminate the constitution making process.

“It is a good start, especially for the legislators, we have a lot of concerns, it is necessary to disseminate the process of constitution making, we should really go on the ground, not mislead the communities on issues of constitution making,”  said Mustafa

SPIDO is tasked with disseminating the Constitution Making Process Act 2022 in the Greater Equatoria Region with support from the United Nations Development Program’s Access to Justice, Security, and Human Rights Strengthening Program to disseminate the Constitution.
