Cabinet approves  over $150 million for construction of 5 megawatt hyper solar power plant in Juba City

The Council of Ministers in their regular meeting on Friday approved 150,190,216 U.S dollars for constructing 5 megawatt hyper solar power plant in Juba City.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, Technology and Postal Services Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok on Friday said that the Minister for Energy and Dams, Peter Marcello, presented to the Cabinet a plan for the construction of a five megawatt hyper solar power plant in Juba City.

He said that the Minister presented a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Energy and Dams and the company TPA Limited.

“The purpose of the project is to support provision of reliable, continuous and affordable energy in Juba City. The estimated cost of this project is 150,190,216 dollars. The project maturity period is 20 years plus 5 grace period. It is actually on consensual loans and this project was deliberated and passed unanimously”.

 Korok said that the Minister of Energy and Dams raised concerns about the 20 megawatt solar plan which is actually invested in the solar plant.

He said that the whole amount for the project was actually 50 million U.S dollar, adding the government managed to pay 20 million dollars and remaining 30 million dollars.

“So the company decided to take the government to the court, arbitration in the US. The minister asked the minister of finance to handle this issue before even moving further to the court issue”.
