The government of Northern Bahr El Ghazel State has set a plan to decongest the crowded main prison facility.
Garang Zechariah Lual, the minister for information and communication in Northern Bahr El Ghazel State on Sunday said that the government will enable this through release of inmates serving minor offenses.
Lual noted that they have availed a piece of land for construction of a new prison facility.
He revealed that main prison which was built for 150 inmates is currently accommodating about 800 inmates, adding that the recorded cases in the main prison facility varied and include cases of theft.
“It is true the prison is overcrowded, the government will look into cases if there are minor cases, for instance if there inmates who are demanded small amount of money, the government will pay so that those people are release,” said Lual on Sunday in an interview.
On Friday, the Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazel state, Simon Uber Mawut paid a visit to the main prison facility where he found that the inmates include women and juveniles.
