The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) on Thursday called on President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny to provide clarity on the way forward for the elections slated for December 2024.

Gen (rtd) Charles Tai Gituai, RJMEC Interim Chairperson said on Thursday during the monthly meeting of peace parties in Juba, that the lack of clarity on the election timeline is creating uncertainty among the citizens.

“It is important, therefore, that the principals of the Parties to the Agreement meet, consider the report of the High- Level Standing Committee, and provide clarity on the way forward,” Gituai said.

Gituai expressed concern over lack of progress in the unification of forces.

“With barely five months left before elections as scheduled in the Roadmap, the lack of adequate elections preparedness and the lack of progress in the unification of forces are causing anxiety among the population of South Sudan, which is already under pressure from the current difficult economic situation,” he said.

Gituai called on the transitional unity government to urgently complete the redeployment of the reamining unified forces to provide security during elections.

He stressed the need for the government to provide the institutions and peace mechanisms with the requisite resources and logistics to enable them to discharge their mandates.
