The Political Parties Council (PPC) on Tuesday passed the Election Code of Conduct for all registered political parties.
The document will guide the conduct of political parties during the upcoming December 2024 elections.
Eng. James Akol Zakayo, the Chairperson of the Political Parties Council said the code of conduct was passed at the council’s meeting.
“In accordance to section (18)(1) of the Political Parties Act, 2012 as (amended), 2022 and read together with section (31) of the Political Parties Act, 2012, the Political Parties Council in its meeting no.6 dated August 13, 2024 do herby unanimously pass the election code of conduct for the registered political parties in the Republic of South Sudan,” Akol said during media brief in Juba.
He said that the order shall come into force on the date of its signature by the Chairperson of the Political Parties’ Council.
“There are two key areas; section 31 of the Political Parties Act gives us powers to regulate all parties and to establish polices of which we have drafted this regulation and Section 18 (1) (e) of the Political Parties Act 2012, as amended 2022 gives me as the Chairperson, the solid right to sign all the regulations and resolutions passed by the Council,” Akol said
Akol encouraged political parties that are not yet registered to register and formalize their operation within the country.
The Political Parties Council closed on June 30, 2024, registration for political parties that will be eligible to contest the elections scheduled for December 22nd this year.
The Political Parties Council is mandated to register or deregister, regulate and monitor activities of political parties under section 21 of the Political Parties Act 2012 as (amended) 2022.
