Insufficient funding hampering Peace Implementation: RJMEC

The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) on Wednesday said that the peace implementation process is being set back due to insufficient and unpredictable funding.

Maj. Gen (rtd) Charles Tai Gituai, Chairperson of RJMEC while briefing virtually the 9705th meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York RJMEC, said that insufficient political will, trust deficit among the parties and capacity gaps, and persistent levels of intercommunal violence in the states are hampering the peace implementation process.

He also noted that the peace agreement institutions and mechanisms have insufficient and unpredictable funding which is hampering their work, adding that the Revitalized Agreement has contributed to relative peace, inclusive governance structures, and the ongoing legal, security and economic reforms.

“It is evident that the Revitalized Agreement remains the most viable blueprint and transformative framework for achieving enduring peace and prosperity,” Gituai said.

Gituai appealed to the UN Security Council to remain seized of the peace process in South Sudan and to encourage the international community to mobilize resources and political support for full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.
