None of the 20 senior four candidates who sat for the 2023 Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) in Akon Modern Senior Secondary School in Warrap State passed the exams.

“Akon Secondary School, noted as our President’s home school, had no single student who passed the exam in 2023/2024. This is a substantial exception,” said Awut Mayom Agok, Warrap State Minister of General Education and instruction on Friday in an interview with The Dawn.

Agok revealed that 2790 students from Warrap State sat for the CSE with an overall performance measured at 61 percent.

She noted that 1459 candidates passed and 1048 failed.

“The school is government owned but students have been relying on cheating for years, if there are no qualified teachers already in schools, then there is no one that prepares students for restricted exams,” said Agok.

She revealed that high performance in Tonj South County with an overall average of 79.4 percent contrasts sharply with the poor results from Twic, Tonj North, and Tonj East counties.

Agok disclosed that the performance of Tonj North County which had 56 candidates stands at 5.4 percent with only 3 students who passed, adding that Tonj East County does not have a registered secondary school.

“We must implement robust student support services, including tutoring, counseling, and extracurricular activities to improve student engagement and performance. Most of the schools do not even have playgrounds for extracurricular activities,” she said.

On August 8, 2024, Awut Deng Acuil, the National Minister of General Education and Instruction announced the results of the CSE examination for academic year 2023/2024, revealing 26,440 passed.
