The ongoing peace initiative dubbed “Tumaini” has of recent come under criticism by some senior government officials, claiming it undermines the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.

First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny was the first person to castigate the peace process and even at some pulled out of the peace process, and of late the Minister of Cabinet Affairs Martin Elia Lomuro is on record for saying the Tumaini initiative should be disregarded because it contradicts and runs parallel with the objectives of the 2018 revitalized peace process.

It is better not to throw the baby out with the bathwater at this time, when South Sudan needs all the prominent political players to participate in the search for sustainable peace.

People like Pagan Amum, the former long serving Secretary General for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and Paul Malong Awan, the former Chief-of-Staff of the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) are historical liberating figures and indispensable figures at this moment when the country is yearning for peace and transition toward democratic governance.

It’s the Tumaini initiative that will bring on board these two prominent players to join the ongoing collective effort to bring peace, healing and reconciliation.
