The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, Dr. Chol Thon Abel has revealed that the state-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited (NILEPET) will take over oil fields previously operated by Malaysian oil firm PETRONAS which is exiting the market.
Thon said that NILPET would actively seek out partnerships with other international companies to ensure the seamless continuation of operations in the oil fields, according to a statement on the office of the Facebook page of the Presidential press unit on Tuesday.
He clarified that the government’s engagement was primarily with PETRONAS Carigali Nile Company Limited rather than its parent company, PETRONAS International Limited.
“This distinction highlights the specific focus on the subsidiary’s involvement in the South Sudanese oil sector,” Thon said.
The government on Monday discussed the withdrawal of PETRONAS Carigali Nile Company Limited (PCNL) from the country’s oil sector. This followed a strategic decision made after a technical committee presented its findings and recommendations to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Petronas Carigali Nile Ltd owns 60 percent working stake in Blocks 5A, 40 percent working stake in Block 3 and 7 and 30 percent working stake in Blocks 1, 2 and 4.
