The transitional unity government has been urged to ponder about extending the transition period for another two years to provide enough time for organizing free, fair and credible elections.

Wol Madut Aluak Reech, the Chairperson of the opposition Republican People’s Party (RPP) told The Dawn on Tuesday that extending the transition period will give way to non-violent elections.

“We as Republican People’s Party, we ask the presidency to take the decision, two years will be enough for every party in the country to prepare for elections, we need elections that can bring peace to South Sudan not elections to divide South Sudanese,” said Madut.

Madut disclosed that his party is currently registering members in the States and the three Administrative Areas before registering with the Political Parties’ Council.

He also welcomed the ongoing Tumaini initiative being mediated by the n, saying it will integrate hold-out opposition parties into the 2018 revitalized peace process ahead of elections.

“We hope that the hold-out parties will join the peace process, but extension of the transition period is better than holding elections, economically the country is not ready for elections, even the election commission has not started voter registration,” said Madut.

The presidency recently requested the National Election Commission (NEC), the Political Parties’ Council (PPC) and the National Constitution Review Commission (NCRC) to advise the country’s leadership on the challenges they are encountering to prepare for elections slated for December this year.
