A lawmaker in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Wednesday appealed to humanitarian agencies and well-wishers to urgently provide humanitarian assistance to the flood affected population in Fangak County of Jonglei State.

Mary Nyiriak Jok, MP representing Fangak County said thousands of people are homeless due to the devastating floods in the area.

“They have lost all the food and everything due to floods,” Nyiriak said during the parliamentary session held in Juba.

She described the situation as dire due to lack of food and shelter.

“In this case, I would like to call upon the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and also well-wishers and UN agencies to help the people of Fangak County,” she said.

Biel Boutrus Biel, the Fangak County Commissioner said thousands of people are suffering as the situation continues to deteriorate. He also urged humanitarian agencies to rush in assistance.

“I am with people who have been displaced, everything has been destroyed. People are lacking clean drinking water, food, shelter and other necessities of life,” Biel said.

He said local authorities are working to relocate those affected to New Fangak.

“What we are doing now is mobilizing speed boats for them to be relocated to new Fangak. This is a very difficult situation. It is not only the town that has been submerged by water, most of the Payams of Fangak are over flooded,” he said.

Flash floods in Fangak County have displaced up to 6,500 people, leaving families stranded and homeless.

The floods occurred after the Zaref River burst its banks and breached a dike on Monday evening.
