The cabinet of Central Equatoria State on Thursday revealed plans to demolish all illegal structures built on school lands.
Gerald Francis, the State Minister of Peace and caretaker Minister of Information and Communication said the demolition is scheduled to start in December this year.
“All buildings built on school lands will be demolished and the demolition will start in December 2024,” Francis told journalists after the weekly cabinet meeting in Juba.
He said the demolition exercise will target illegal structures on public-school lands in the State.
“We know even the national government came up with this resolution and now we are going for its implementation,” said Francis.
Francis said the cabinet directed the State Secretary General to write to the minister of education to notify squatters to evacuate with immediate effect.
He added that the exercise aims to recover all land grabbed from schools.
“We want to see all our school lands free so that we can create an enabling environment for our pupils to learn and study well,” said Francis.
In May, 2024, the cabinet approved the demolition of illegal structures on school lands across the country.
The decision came after a memo from Awut Deng Acuil, Minister of General Education and Instruction, was presented to the council of ministers.
The memo requested the government to reclaim land illegally occupied by individuals.
