Heavy floods in Warrap State have cut off the key road linking Gogrial East County to the main Kuajok town in the State, said the MP representing the area in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Monday.

Nyang Augustino Bak, the Gogrial East County MP said the floods caused by the recent downpour have made movement of essential goods and people extremely difficult.

“The only murram road which connects the County headquarters has been washed away by the running water, making it impossible to transport the essential goods including medicine,” said Augustino during parliamentary session in Juba.

Augustino added that residents living at the County headquarters are unable to access KuaJok, Payam, and other towns of Warrap State.

“The information that I want to pass to this house is about devastating flooding in Warrap State, especially Gogrial East County, which has been severely affected by the downpour of rainfall,” he said.

Augustino said there are fears that the prices of goods and services will rise if the state government does not urgently intervene.

“Right Honorable Speaker, the residents are urgently appealing to the state and national governments for immediate assistance,” he said.

The country has started to experience the worst floods following rise in water level of Lake Victoria, the largest Lake in the region.

The States expected to be hit hard by the floods include Jonglei, Lakes, Unity, Upper Nile and Warrap State that are already experiencing unprecedented floods.

In July 2024, the cabinet approved 78 million U.S dollars under its emergency flood preparedness and response plan to mitigate the impact of looming floods on livelihoods and infrastructure across the country.

The funds are meant to enhance the country’s ability to prepare for anticipated disasters.
