At least five people were killed and 15 others got injured during Monday’s inter-clan violence in Cueibet County of Lakes State.

Juol Nhomngek Daniel, MP representing Cueibet County in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly on SPLM-IO ticket, told on Tuesday during parliamentary session in Juba that the violence erupted among communities of the two payams of Cueibet County, without citing what triggered the fighting.

Several people mostly women, children and elderly have been displaced due to the violence, added the lawmaker.

“Many were displaced between the two payams within Cueibet County, and this happened yesterday and yet we have a government in place,” Nhomngek said.

He called on the government to enforce law and order in the State to restore peace among the communities.

“The primary responsibilities of the government of South Sudan are only three. One is peace and security, and under international law, it’s very clear that the government of South Sudan has a duty to protect the citizens not only externally but internally,” Nhomngek said.

Nhomngek blamed the security sector for the rampant insecurity across the country.

“We have a duty to protect the citizens so that they don’t destroy each other because that is the meaning of the government. The presence of rampant insecurity around the country not only in Cueibet County means that there is a failed security system,” he said.

Nhomngek urged the lawmakers to summon all relevant security organs to explain what they are doing to curb the rampant insecurity.
