The Eritrean community on Monday handed a newly built modern library to the administration of the University of Northern Bahr el Ghazal in Aweil town.
The library built on a 12 by 8 acre piece of land at a cost of 30,000 U.S dollars is fully equipped with two offices to accommodate students and lecturers.
Yohannes Teklemicael, the Eritrean Ambassador in South Sudan said the facility will foster research while boosting human capacity development at the university.
“Library for the University was contributed by the Eritrean community living in our land. You know, we Eritreans, the relationship we have with this amazing country is historical,” Teklemicael said during the handover ceremony in Aweil town on Sunday.
Teklemicael said the Eritrean community has invested heavily in South Sudan since independence in 2011, adding that these investments are a result of the historical relationship between the two sisterly countries.
Simon Ober Mawut, Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State said the library will enable university students to widen their knowledge and skills.
“I will also be taking my time to come and also update the little knowledge that I have. So I want to say once again, thank you for supporting the people of Northern Bahr el Ghazal and the people of the great country of South Sudan,” Mawut said.
He praised the Eritrean community for constructing the first ever comprehensive facility to boost students’ research.
“As government, we will do all that it takes to provide a conducive and friendly environment for the people of Eritrea to operate their business,” he said.
Prof. Stephen Chol, Vice Chancellor of the University of Northern el Ghazal State appreciated the Eritrean community for the support.
“I would be very pleased if your country can cooperate with this University by creating relationship with one of the Universities in Eritrea to help in the area of visiting lecturers, references, and equipment such as computers, printers, labs, power and more importantly shelves, chairs and tables for this library,” Chol said.
The University of Northern Bahr el Ghazal was established in 2011, as a government-supported institution of higher education, to address the educational requirements of communities in the State.
The university is located in Aweil West County of Northern el Ghazal State.
