The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Monday held consultative symposium ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting scheduled for September 22, 2024 in New York.

Deng Deng Nhial, the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, revealed that they held consultation with the United Nations system on the Sustainable Development Goals, international peace and security, science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation.

“It is about the summit of the future, which will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of September in New York, before the opening of the General Assembly and the debate at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, member States pledged to strengthen global governance in their declaration on the 75th anniversary of the United Nations,” said Nhial.

Kiki Gbeho, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General who also doubles as UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, said the national consultative workshop provides opportunity to national stakeholders and partners, ministries, departments and youth groups, women groups, academia, civil society and private sector to contribute their views and ideas to inform South Sudan’s national position.

Gbeho said the current humanitarian crisis is affecting 9 million people in addition to the continuous influx of people fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan.

“However, within every challenge lies an opportunity. Therefore, in line with the goals of the summit, we will continue to support South Sudan to demonstrate resilience and overcome these challenges as the nation continues efforts to find a working formula for peace,” she said.
