Floods have submerged farms and made road access impossible in Rumbek East County of Lakes State.
Mangar Machuol Malok, Commissioner of Rumbek East County, said on Saturday that the absence of of culverts along major roads in Yirol, Rumbek and the entire greater Bhar El Ghazal region have worsened the floods.
“Road access had been cut off in Rumbek East County for the last two weeks, we ask humanitarian agencies to provide temporary shelters and other necessary items to the affected population,” Malok told The Dawn during interview.
He disclosed that the Africa Resource Corporation (ARC) company on the request of the State Governor Rin Tueny Mabor has started setting up culverts along roads which has eased flow of water.
Malok asked pastoralists to regulate movement of their animals near the farms in a bid to avoid conflict with farmers.
South Sudan has been experiencing the worst floods since independence in 2011.
Over 710,000 people have been affected by floods across the country, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
