A member of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly on Tuesday called for the retirement of elderly civil servants who reach their age of retirement in order to allow young able persons to replace them.
Natelina Amjima Malek, the deputy chairperson of the parliamentary committee for information tabled before the house a motion to guide on the retirement of civil servants.
She requested the house to summon the Minister of Public Service to explain why the mandatory retirement of public employees at the age of 65 is not being implemented.
“Pension fund has been receiving employees’ pension from the Ministry of Finance and Planning since its establishment and there has been no retirement of civil servants since 2011,” said Amjima.
She disclosed that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning has been deducting salaries for civil servants for nearly 13 years without retiring a singer person.
“The august house has been passing the national budget for the last 13 years including the deductions of salaries from civil servants,” said Amjima.
Amijma said that elderly people should retire to allow new and fresh graduates to join the public workforce.
“Retire old employees who have reached the retirement age in accordance with the law to pave the way for employment of fresh graduates into the public institution,” she said.
Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of TNLA submitted the motion to the committees of public service, and human resources and the legislation and justice to scrutinize the motion and file a report after two weeks.
She said the provision of retirement will benefit employees of the public sector.
“It is important that there must be a pension scheme in this country. So that some of us should retire and create a space for the young graduates who are graduating and have no jobs,” said Nunu.
She called for promotion of civil servants to create a space for others, adding that when persons stick around in an office for so long it denies others chance to serve.
