The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday trained Lakes State officials on the details of the population estimation survey that was conducted in 2021.
Makur Chol Malual, the Chief Coordinator of National Bureau of Statistics in Lakes State, said during the training workshop in Rumbek that the officials were informed on how the enumeration process of the population survey was conducted.
He said that with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) they conducted population estimation survey from May 28 to June 15 2021 across the country, which provided accurate population estimates and socio- economic characteristics of the inhabitants.
The population survey put the population of the country at 12.4 million with the population of Lakes State standing at 1, 265,473.
The Deputy Governor of Lakes State, Isaiah Akol Mathiang said that government officials will do their part in disseminating the message to the grassroots, adding that the population estimation survey is very crucial in guiding the elections in 2026.
He said that the national government is ready to allocate the budget for the conduct of the population census set for January 2025.
