President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Saturday  signed the Amendment  Transitional Constitution of 2011, extending the transitional period by two years.

The Speaker of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, Jemma Nunu Kumba presented the amendment to the President for assent, according to a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Presidential Press Unit.

It said the extension of the transition period will enable the government to complete the pending essential tasks outlined in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement and adequately prepare for democratic elections scheduled for December 2026.

According to the statement, Kumba urged all stakeholders to collaborate in implementing the necessary provisions for the upcoming elections, reaffirming the transitional unity government’s commitment to exceptionally deliver on it’s mandate to pave way for free, fair and credible polls.

She appealed to the international partners to stand with them during the extended transition period.

Kumba noted that Amendment Number 12 of the Transitional Constitution extended the tenure of the President, the legislature, the state assemblies and the entire transitional government of national unity.

This grand amendment was unanimously ratified by the National Assembly on Friday during an extraordinary sitting following the decision taken by the presidency.
